News Bites: Classes and Gluten Free Food Fair

2010 Portland Gluten-Free Fair

First up, the Portland Metro GIG has announced the time and place of the 2010 Portland Gluten-Free Food Fair. It will be on Saturday, May 1, 2010. It is open from 11 AM to 2 PM at the All Saints Catholic Church at 3847 NE Glisan Street. The cost is $5 per person for a max of $10 per family. Children under 12 get in free. They will be having raffles at 12 noon, 1 PM, and 1:45 PM. Here’s their blurb:

The Portland, Mid-Willamette Valley, and McMinnville Branches of the Gluten Intolerance Group (GIG) are hosting the 6th Annual Gluten Free Food Fair on Saturday, May 1st, 2010. The mission of these support groups is to increase awareness of gluten intolerance diseases by providing support to individuals and families; accurate information and educational programs; and outreach to health care professionals and restaurants. This event is a fund-raiser which allows the three GIG groups to offer events and services without a charge.

We’ve attended the fair the past two years and always find it very interesting. Here are our notes from the 2009 Gluten-Free Food Fair.

Gluten-Free Class at Bob’s Red Mill

I forgot all about this! There is an upcoming gluten-free cooking class at Bob’s Red Mill on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 2:00-4:00 PM. There will also be one at 5:00-7:00 PM but that one is already full. The class fee is $45. Click here for the current class schedule. Here’s the blurb:

We are so excited to have gluten-free expert and cookbook author Carol Fenster, Ph.D. back to help us out with great baking time-savers. Carol will focus on her fabulous Gluten-Free Breakthrough Bread. It’s as easy as mix the dough, store in the fridge and bake throughout the week…as you wish, as much as you wish. Using Bob’s GF Shortbread Cookie mix, Carol will also demonstrate her Frangipane Tart using the cookie mix as the crust, layered with almond paste and topped with fresh fruit. A second mouthwatering recipe from this mix will be her Decadent Chocolate Bars. Additional recipes will include a fabulous Cherry Cobbler and just in time for summer Strawberry Shortcake. Learn how to take a simple mix and make incredible, easy desserts.

Carol Fenster is the author of a number of books on gluten-free cooking. I think that the two most popular are: 1,000 Gluten-Free Recipes and Gluten-Free 101.

We really enjoyed the last gluten-free class at Bob’s Red Mill, and bet this one will be great too.

Restaurant Review: The Radio Room on Alberta

Reader Allyson notified us of gluten-free options at the Radio Room on Alberta, so we went to check it out. Their dinner menu has a number of gluten free items, but their brunch menu does not, so make sure you go there for dinner. Besides a regular dining area, the Radio Room also has a lounge and an upper deck.

The radio room itself has more of an upscale bar atmosphere, sort of like Echo on MLK. The decor is half ’50s diner and half Interview Magazine. When we visited, they had various old school punk and post-punk playing at a comfortable volume. So, the Sex Pistols, Ramones, and other such bands. They have a very long cocktail list, and quite a long menu. The gluten-free offerings can be listed rather quickly. They are: Bacon Wrapped Prawns, Cab Calamari, Radio Wings, Baby Artichoke Salad, English Beet Salad, Mashed Potatoes Side with Gravy, Ahi Tuna Tacos, Stuffed Chayote Squash, and for dessert, a chocolate mousse dubbed “Chocolate City.” After some discussion, we learned that the Caesar Salad could be made gluten-free by omitting the croutons.

Our waitress was very nice and knowledgeable. She answered all of our questions about the menu and in the case of the Caesar Salad, came out with a ingredient list, which was very reassuring. She also informed us that they have a dedicated fryer for their gluten-free fried items, which is really awesome.

Although our tipster, Allyson, recommended the Ahi Tacos and English Beet Salad, we decided to eschew convention and get a Caesar salad and two openers instead of any of the entrees. This is in part because we both love bacon and also because I’m a man on a mission to find some good gluten-free calamari.

The Caesar salad, as you can see, had a heck of a lot of cheese on it. While the lettuce was fresh and the olives were tasty, we felt that the salad was a little too dry and were wishing that they put more lemon juice and some anchovies in it. The Bacon Wrapped Prawns were interesting. They came with a raspberry-chipotle dipping sauce. I thought that this was a very novel combination, but we both agreed that the sauce didn’t go very well with the bacon for some reason. Maybe it was just us, though. I could see someone really getting into the combo. Sienna felt that the prawns were undercooked, because the texture was a little gristly and springy. The Calamari was good. It was way better than the Calamari at the Hawthorne Fish House and came with a very nice tartar sauce. At the same time, like other gluten-free Calamari we’ve had, it was a little tasteless. Sienna commented that someone should try making a gluten-free beer battered Calamari.

As you can probably tell by the above, we ended up feeling like the Radio Room’s gluten-free offerings were good but not awesome. We did end up feeling like it would be a great venue if you wanted to go out drinking with a bunch of friends and get some bar food. For that purpose we would definitely recommend it.

We want to know: Do you know of any other bars with gluten-free menu items? Have you eaten at the Radio Room? What did you think? Let us know!

Product Review: Gluten-Free Mama’s Cookie Mix

I’m continuing to work my way through the gluten free flour mixes that we got samples of from Gluten Free Mama. Check out our earlier review of their Gluten Free Pancake Mix. Something I really miss is cookies. It’s funny, too, because there are a lot of gluten-free cookie mixes available now. There’s even a Betty Crocker Mix. I just haven’t got around to checking any of them out.

The other day I found myself at home with some time on my hands and a hankering for some cookies, so I broke out the mix. Here are the ingredients: Organic Evaporated Cane Sugar, White Rice Flour, Tapioca Flour, Potato Starch, Sweet Rice Flour, Almond Meal Flour, Aluminum-Free Baking Powder (Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate, Sodium Bicarbonate, Corn Starch, Monocalcium Phosphate), Xanthan Gum, Sea Salt, Vanilla Powder (Vanilla Bean Extractives, Evaporated Cane Juice, Silica, Cellulose). It happens that these are the exact same ingredients that are used in their pancake mix, except that there is more cane sugar in this mix. There is also more salt. Mama’s figures that there are fifteen 100 calorie servings in the container, and that each serving has 100 mg of salt.

The cookies are a snap to make. Just add 1.2 cup butter, an egg, and 2-3 Tbsp of milk.

Then roll out on a surface with some rice-flour to keep the dough from sticking.

Cut out shapes and top with sprinkles, sugar, or what-have-you. I topped half of mine with sugar and half with shredded coconut. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 350* for 12-14 minutes or until edges start to brown.

I sort of separated the two batches and took a photo. They look kind of scared of each other here. While I wasn’t that excited by the Mama’s Pancake Mix, I did enjoy these cookies. Sienna did not like either product. She says that they have an nasty metallic after-taste. It’s somewhat rare that Sienna and I differ so much on a product, but there it is. On the plus side, that left more cookies for me! So, our verdict is maybe you’ll like them, and maybe not.
